Permanent Full Time Equine Veterinary Surgeon - Buckinghamshire - Ref: ST11216

Job Role

Veterinary Surgeon

Job Type

My client is seeking an experienced Equine Veterinary Surgeon who enjoys the freedom of ambulatory work but also appreciates the time to use and develop their skills in a clinic environment with operating and inpatient facilities.

Most of their ambulatory work is within a thirty-minute drive of the practice to minimise travel time. The majority of horses they see are leisure/competition horses with an increasing geriatric population (and a few donkeys!) all of whose owners appreciate a practice happy to discuss every treatment option.

The vet team is supported by 3 experienced Registered Veterinary Nurses and a Clinical Groom plus an Equine Coordinator and a Practice Manager.

The standard working week is 5 days plus out of hours. There will be 1:4 nights and weekends with time off in lieu. You will be on call from home, so you do not have to stay on-site and phone calls are taken by a receptionist. The normal working hours are from 8:30am to 6:00pm daily, depending on workload, with a one-hour unpaid lunch break.

The Salary for this role is up to £50,000 plus relocation allowance.

My client is a long-established and busy mixed practice with a varied caseload. They are renowned for their supportive culture, collaborative approach and for having a close-knit team. The practice was an example practice in the BVA Good Workplace project and was one of three finalists in the Pet Plan Practice of the Year Award in 2019.

They are BEVA accredited for stud work. They have an equine clinic with inpatient facilities and an operating theatre. Visiting Veterinary Surgeons come in to carry out the more complex procedures and they refer abdominal surgeries. There are separate small animal and equine departments, both Tier 2 RCVS accredited. Their main site facilities also include a stand-alone pet shop and canine rehabilitation unit. They have staff kennels to allow dog owners to bring their pets to work and enjoy walks in local woods and fields. They provide lunches daily and hold frequent social events.

They host client evenings and have held very popular open days. They visit schools and take part in local shows and careers fairs, also working with and fundraising for local charities.

Two members of their team have worked for Mission Rabies in Africa and India. Nationally, they have provided veterinary services at the 2012 London Olympics plus supervision on film sets for many films and commercials. One of their Equine Vets works at the Horse of the Year Show and they provide duty Vet cover for local equine shows and point-to-point events.

The 63 strong team consists of 18 Veterinary Surgeons (14 Small Animal and 4 Equine), 17 Registered Veterinary Nurses, 2 Student Veterinary Nurses, and 26 Support Staff.

Certificate holders:

. Vets: one Small Animal medicine, one equine practice. Vet certificates in progress include CertAVPs in small animal practice, equine orthopaedics, and equine lameness.

. Nurses: two with anaesthesia, one ECC (plus one in progress) , one feline nursing, one exotics nursing, one equine behaviour, one SA behaviour, one DipAVN (surgical).

. Practice Manager - Certificate in Veterinary Practice Management. One physiotherapist with MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy and one Canine Massage Therapist.

They are looking for an Equine Veterinary Surgeon who wants to be their clinical best in a practice that values individual equine care and excellent client care. Good communication skills are a must as is experience of working independently in first opinion ambulatory practice, managing both routine and emergency cases. An interest in internal medicine is desirable but not essential.

Qualification requirements:

. Veterinary degree, MRCVS.
