My client is looking for a Head Veterinary nurse to join their busy, friendly practice in Bedfordshire. Main purpose of the role: To manage all aspects of the nursing team to ensure excellent teamwork and the highest level of clinical care. To deliver a high standard of nursing care to the patients, assist the veterinary surgeons, liaise with clients with regards to inpatient care and carry out nurse clinics. To deliver and advanced standard of nursing and to support the Student veterinary nurse through their training and the assessment process Responsibilities: •Maintain professional nursing standards in accordance with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) guidelines Responsible for the supervision and management of the nursing team in accordance with professional and RCVS standards •Manage nurses and nursing services (including auxiliary team) by organising the duty rota according to activity/departmental need, anticipating when clinical activity increases/decreases, managing the forward planning of absences and the effective use of temporary staff, ensuring the correct skill mix is in place to deliver care. •Clinically based, working alongside junior nurses, auxiliaries, and other clinical staff, ensuring the highest level of patient care is delivered. •To provide consistent, clear, clinical, and professional leadership and act as a mentor for all staff demonstrating professional awareness and accountability in care. Managing students. •Agreeing an individual assessment plan with each candidate and ensuring that this plan is reviewed regularly and revised in accordance with progress. •Employing a variety of appropriate assessment methods to determine candidate competency e.g. observation, statements from candidates and witnesses, professional discussion, questioning and simulation. •Assessing candidate’s performance and making assessment decisions against the occupational standards. •Providing the VN student with prompt, accurate and constructive feedback on their performance. •Maintaining assessment records to include tutorial records. •Record and/or file any correspondence, both internal and from the VNAC to include telephone conversations, e-mails, and letters as well as student reports. •Instil an inclusive culture of teamwork across the hospital •Input into all new staff (clinical and non-clinical) induction to the hospital •Check and close patient accounts for finance team and in advance of patient discharge •Ensure pain scores sheets and early intervention sheets are compliant and effectively used. •Ensure completion of CPD log / online tracker in accordance with RCVS requirements. Management Responsibilities: •Identify service and policy development changes needed to ensure a continuing excellent service level and ensure implementation •Identify training needs of new and current team members, proposing appropriate resources to address these training requirements •Ensuring through the Auxiliary team, effective stock management and control and the undertaking of stock takes •Be aware of, and conversant with, the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and comply with the regulations set down to ensure safety to patients, staff, and visitors •Undertake at the request of the Head Nurse, Health and Safety/Infection control audits, producing rectification plans as needed. •Ensure all incidents and untoward occurrences are recorded according to practice Policy •Be aware of, and conversant with, the practice Fire Policy and be fully aware of the position of fire alarms, emergency equipment and exits. •Ensuring compliance with risk assurance processes including health and safety; security; clinical governance, Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) guidelines, and data protection. •Support the Clinical Director and Practice Manager in new projects/encourage team involvement in new projects to ensure the smooth running and continual improvement of the practice. •Monitor staff performance & coordinate annual appraisals. •Carry out any reasonable requests made by the Partners, Associate Vets, or other members of the management team.
